| Course description: | This course will familiarize students with methods to evaluate and treat people who are neurodiverse-neurodivergent and those who are non-verbal or who have limited verbal communication. Genetic inheritance, syndromes, progressive neurological diseases, and other etiological and concomitant conditions are discussed. Authentic assessment, functional communication evaluation, ecological inventories, functional and applied behavioral analysis, grant-funding, and client/family counseling are specifically addressed, as is chronic disability and end of life care. Pre-linguistic, paralinguistic, and social aspects of communication are emphasized. Low/high tech systems, task analysis, social and legal issues, and feature matching across several modalities will be included (i.e., listening, speaking, reading, and writing). Students will complete a systematic review and a grant fund proposal in this course. (F, S, Su) |
