Course description: | Primary emphasis on literacy development of all children from Pre-K to age 8. Authentic assessment and instruction strategies are investigated in the following literacy areas: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Exploration of the stages of literacy development and teaching students with diverse abilities including but not limited to learning disabilities, ELL, physically challenged, and social/ emotional behavioral issues. Application of current state and national standards/frameworks in lesson planning and instruction. Best practice reading theory emphasized, including structured literacy. Tutoring children of diverse abilities with a focus on the struggling reader and/or ELL reader is required on a weekly basis in addition to class hours. Twenty (20) hours of field experience required. Concurrent enrollment: RED 350L. Prerequisite: admission to Teacher Education Program. (F, S) |
